2026 Workshop: Behavioral Management in an Age of Austerity

The ASP Primate Care Committee (PCC) Pre-Conference Workshop will be held on June 16 and 17 2026

Location: Crystal Gateway Marriott (1700 Richmond Hwy, Arlington, VA 22202)

The ASP PCC workshops are two half-day sessions of instruction and discussion on primate welfare and behavioral management topics. These workshops are designed for caregivers, keepers, behavior management personnel, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, curators, supervisors, institutional animal care and use committee members, and research personnel.

This workshop comprises two half-day sessions with the focus of elevating nonhuman primate environments and individual well-being. We will discuss balancing budgetary constraints, standards of care requirements, scientific advancements in behavioral management, and the complex problems that arise across captive settings (zoos, sanctuaries, and research facilities). The workshop will combine interactive team-based learning exercises with evidence-based instruction to tackle unique behavioral management challenges (i.e., social aggression, providing functionally and species appropriate environments, providing dynamic enrichments, staff training, etc.). Content and instruction will be provided by facilitators, presenters and application experts with working knowledge of the complex needs across captive settings and budget considerations. Upon completion of the workshop, participants will gain understanding of functionally appropriate environments, environmental improvements that can promote positive welfare of nonhuman primates, practical staff training and budgeting approaches that can elevate welfare from coping to thriving. This workshop is designed for caregivers, keepers, behavior management personnel, veterinarians, veterinary technicians, curators, supervisors, institutional animal care and use committee members, and research personnel.
